Client Profile

Scott Murphy, Sleep Train/Mattress Discounters

When Scott Murphy responded to a newspaper ad 23 years ago by a local mattress company looking for a driver, he couldn’t have imagined it would develop into a lifelong career. “As SleepTrain grew, I moved up and grew with them.”

Now Sleep Train/Mattress Discounters’ General Manager of Operations, Scott oversees their three Distribution Centers, which service retail locations throughout the state and Reno, Nevada. “I oversee the centers to make sure they function efficiently, and are standardized. The three centers must operate in the same way in order to maximize efficiency throughout the company.” He also ensures that the DC’s stay within budget, and that the work environment is safe.

Even in this economy, Scott is optimistic about the future. He credits company values and an astute approach to marketing to SleepTrain’s ability to “maintain strong numbers and stay ahead of everyone out there.” For instance, while other companies have had to cut their advertising budget, SleepTrain has concentrated on getting more for its advertising dollar. This has allowed SleepTrain “to increase market share and position ourselves for growth opportunities” as the economy improves.

Scott sees important similarities between SleepTrain and DSI. “Both companies share a common goal of taking care of the customer. We both believe communication is the key to a successful relationship,” he adds. He lauds DSI managers Alice Jones and Carlos Guerrero in Northern California, and Gina Frazier in San Diego for their work in these areas.

“I have a great relationship with the DSI management team. We have the same interests and values, and this makes it easy to work together.”

“Scott is the epitome of a risk taker and visionary,” states Regional Director Carlos Guerrero. “He could see the economic downturn coming, and started taking steps to
steamline Sleep Train so that they would remain strong. He also helped increase the efficiency of deliveries.”

Recently married, Scott and his bride enjoy boating on the lake, hiking, working out and going to the movies. True to his roots in Northern California, he’s been a Bay Area sports fan for years, supporting the 49’rs, Giants, and Warriers, attending games whenever possible. But what he’s really hooked on, he confesses, is Peets coffee.
