Contractor Profile

Jose “Lucho” Pelagio, Pelagio Trucking

Jose “Lucho” Pelagio believes in the American Dream, and for good reason. As recently as five years ago, he was a cook in a restaurant in Mexico. Today, he says proudly, his life “is very different.” He owns two trucks, and employs a driver and a helper.

Lucho has been with DSI since he entered the delivery business. “I started out as a helper myself,” he tells us. “Then I became a driver and when I was able to rent a small truck of my own, I became a contractor.”

Lucho delivers for Sleep Train-Mattress Discounters, in Northern California and covers areas from Redding to Reno. To help reduce the cost of gas, he searches for the lowest prices and uses an additive, which he believes increases his mileage. In addition, he arranges his routes to minimize retracing his steps, although he says that’s not always possible. If there’s an unexpected customer development, he’ll return to that area to deliver the product.

“I believe that the most important thing I have to do is make the customer happy,” he says. “This can be challenging, but I believe it is the key to my success.” North Group Director Jonathan Arrendale agrees. “At his account Lucho is known as their MVC – Most Valuable Contractor. “Any time we have a customer in need of some extra “TLC,” Lucho is the person we turn to. He is definitely in our top tier of contractors.”

Lucho finds the staff at DSI easy to work with and very helpful. “They respect us, ”he says. “and, any time there is a problem, they step in to resolve the issue quickly.” He plans to buy one or two more trucks in the future and hopes to continue his partnership with a “great company.”

Married for 20 years, Lucho has four children and focuses on spending time with them when he’s home.
