Dave Benbow, Warehouse Manager at Banner Mattress
Dave
Benbow covers a good deal of ground in his role as Warehouse Manager
for Banner Mattress. He is responsible for both inbound receiving
and outbound preparation of merchandise, the delivery process, and
inventory control in Banner’s 150,000 square foot warehouse
in Riverside.
The warehouse “uses a four-tier racking system and RF electronics
to scan all items,” Benbow says, enabling the company to facilitate
a high volume of next day deliveries.
Dave came to Banner two and half years ago from a job in management
with a food distribution company. “It’s a whole different
world,” he relates. “If a delivery to a restaurant is
short a case of a particular soda, we can substitute something else.
But if we send the wrong mattress, or we’re short a cabinet
the customer expects, we have to make things right immediately.
It’s much more demanding.”
“Furthermore,” he continued, “Banner owes its
75 successful years in business to a philosophy of providing the
best service and value available. So it’s important that our
customers are satisfied.”
Banner began contracting with DSI this February, a major departure
from their previous in-house program. “New drivers are still
adjusting to Banner operating procedures, as well
as our products,” he says.
“Cooperation and communication are key to making the relationship
work,” he adds. Dave’s goal is to improve the rate of
successful deliveries so he can focus more attention on the warehouse.
Benbow noted that Banner shares DSI’s commitment to charities
and to the community. In partnership with Marriott Corporation,
the company delivered 150 mattresses and box springs to Katrina
victims, and has provided mattresses and beds to the Ronald McDonald
House in Loma Linda. He adds that Banner Mattress originated Project
Linus at Loma Linda Children’s Hospital, an effort in which
their retail locations are used as collection points for handmade
blankets donated to
children in long term care units.
Dave moved to Southern California from San Francisco to be near
his six-year-old daughter, but maintains ties to his Northern California
roots. An avid sportsman who’s been playing baseball for thirty
years, he vows “I’ll be a Giants fan forever.”
