Independent Hauler Profile
Josè Gutierrez, Mary Queen Deliveries, Inc
Josè Gutierrez is a man on the move. He and his company, Mary Queen Deliveries Inc., not only operate trucks for Sleep America in Phoenix, Arizona, they recently expanded into the state of Washington with the Sleep Country USA account. “Since I’m based in Phoenix, there’s some traveling involved with the Seattle contract,” he says, “but I have a good manager there who handles the business in my absence.”
Gutierrez started Mary Queen Deliveries in 2004 and began contracting with DSI Delivery in 2005. Currently, he runs two trucks for Sleep Country and three for Sleep America. On busy weekends and holidays he adds trucks as necessary, and always has an extra team ready to go in both locations. “That way, I make sure my employees get two days off each week.”
Group Director Jonathan Arrendale comments that “Josè had been a consistently excellent hauler for DSI in Arizona for several years before the opportunity to grow his business in Washington developed. Not only did he step up and aggressively pursue this expansion but he and his teams have flourished in the new market. I consider Josè & Mary Queen Deliveries, Inc. to be among our best hauling partners in this business.”
Gutierrez attributes a good part of his success to trust. “My employees trust me, and I trust them. Plus, we maintain open lines of communication with the client and DSI, and that makes it possible for my company to run smoothly, despite the distance involved.”
Gutierrez is confident about the future, both for DSI and Mary Queen Deliveries. “As DSI Delivery expands in Southern California, I hope to expand with them. They trust us, and treat the haulers with respect, and that creates a positive atmosphere. It’s my experience that when people are appreciated, they have a desire to excel.”
He adds that his own philosophy of always trying to “make the impossible possible,” mirrors DSI’s motto, “Whatever it Takes, We Deliver.”
Gutierrez did just that recently when he had a nighttime delivery to a disabled customer in a mountainous location. “We had to back up a long hill to get to the house, only to discover that the furniture was too large for the narrow stairway that led to the second floor bedroom. So we took the furniture apart, carried everything upstairs a little at a time, and put it back together piece by piece. The customer sent us a thank you note, and I felt gratified that I could help someone who was disabled.”
That wasn’t the first time Josè has helped the disabled.
When he’s not driving his own truck, Gutierrez drives a minibus transporting the disabled and seniors in the Phoenix area to their doctors’ appointments or other local destinations. “I love to work, and I especially enjoy helping people in need,” he says.
Josè’s work ethic will soon be tested further. He and his wife and their two year old daughter are preparing for the impending arrival of twins! Congratulations to Jose and his family. |
